Media Literacy as a 21st-Century Skill: Integration into Language Classes

It has been becoming increasingly important to be information and media literate individuals who can think critically while engaging with any kind of information. According to UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy Assessment Framework: Country Readiness and Competencies (2013), information and media literacy are essential 21st-century skills, crucial for becoming literate in media and information, which is fundamental for a society’s sustainable growth. This presentation highlights my insights from a media literacy course across Turkey, led by the Turkish American Association and supported by Arizona State University. Building on my gains from this course, we will explore the importance of implementing media literacy objectives and discuss their integration into ELT classes with some practical ideas.
