Arum Perwitasari & Joanna Wrzesinska: Resources to support writing for academic purposes

In this webinar, we will discuss common writing challenges of L2 learners. We will also present resources and tools developed by Educational Testing Service (ETS) to assist instructors in developing and assessing their students’ academic writing skills. In the first part of the session, we will delve into TOEFL iBT® test resources specifically related to the writing section. We will share examples of scoring guides for writing and benchmark responses. These may help teachers reflect on their current approach to develop and assess academic writing skills in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) context. In the second part of the session, we will explore additional resources for teaching academic writing called The Writing Mentor®. It is a free Google Docs Add-on, which aims to support all learners with developing academic writing skills by providing feedback with the use of natural language processing (NLP) technologies. This tool may help teachers to guide their students to become more autonomous learners.
