Revision and refinement of CEFR descriptors

Last updated on

In 2008 an EAQUALS project group led by Brian North, an EAQUALS Board Member and co-author of the CEFR, began a revision of the CEFR descriptors developed in the 1990s for the purposes of the European Language Portfolio project. The idea was to further refine them and to add ‘plus’ levels in between the existing CEFR levels, making a total of 11 levels (instead of 6). This makes the descriptors more useful for language teaching institutions where students stay for short periods or take courses of a few hours per week. The result was a new set of three banks of CEFR descriptors
