Meet the Speaker: Martin Fellenz

Unpacking Management and Leadership

This plenary examines the nature of management and leadership and explores the implicit assumptions that shape how we manage, how we lead – and how we and others follow. Avoiding dogmatic definitions of leadership, this session invites critical reflection by offering a clearly defined, post-heroic conception of leadership that provides a clearly explicated distinction between management and leadership along the dimensions of motivation and legitimacy. The plenary challenges both undiscerning views of management as well as traditional, often hierarchical conceptions of leadership and engages participants in a critical reevaluation of their own assumptions about these concepts. A central aspect of this reflective work is the focus on followers and followership, and on the opportunities that the developmental orientation so central to educational practice can offer for developing more successful and impactful leadership practices.
