New Eaquals Accreditation for K-12 Language Education
A New Benchmark for Schools: Eaquals Launches K-12 Language Accreditation
Quality assurance has always been a central conversation in language education. Whether we work in language schools, universities, or schools, we all know how important it is to demonstrate that the learning environments we create are safe, effective, and well managed.
That’s why the launch of a new K-12 accreditation framework by Eaquals is such a significant development for the sector.
The Eaquals Inspection Scheme for K-12 Institutions has been designed specifically for primary and secondary schools delivering language education. It provides a quality assurance framework that focuses on how language programmes are managed and delivered within the school environment.
For institutions working with younger learners aged 3–18, this new scheme offers a way to demonstrate that their language provision meets internationally recognised standards.
What K-12 Language Accreditation Means for Schools
Language education in schools takes place within a broader learning environment. Students study multiple subjects, develop socially and academically, and rely on strong support systems.
Because of this, the new accreditation focuses on more than teaching quality alone.
Instead, the framework evaluates how language programmes operate within the school environment. In particular, it focuses on areas such as:
- safeguarding and student wellbeing
- age-appropriate teaching approaches
- pastoral care and support
- the integration of language learning within the wider school curriculum
Together, these areas help schools show that their language provision offers a safe, supportive and high-quality learning experience.
As Lou McLaughlin, Executive Director of Eaquals, explains:
“The new framework recognises that language education within primary and secondary schools operates within a broader educational structure. This accreditation focuses specifically on how language programmes are managed and delivered within the K-12 school context, ensuring that institutions can demonstrate both strong language education practices and the support systems required for younger learners.”
A Tailored Approach to Accreditation
One of the defining features of Eaquals accreditation is its tailored approach. Different types of institutions face different challenges. Therefore, a single framework would not reflect the realities of the sector.
For this reason, Eaquals developed four accreditation schemes, each designed for a specific context.
These include:
- The Eaquals Inspection Scheme for Language Centres, which accredits language schools and corporate training providers
- The Eaquals Inspection Scheme for Higher Education, designed for university language centres and departments
- The Eaquals Inspection Scheme for Online Providers, evaluating institutions that deliver online language programmes
- The Eaquals Inspection Scheme for K-12 Institutions, which focuses on primary and secondary schools
As a result, institutions are evaluated according to their own teaching environment, rather than through a generic checklist.
In addition, the accreditation process focuses on improvement. Inspectors provide detailed feedback that helps institutions strengthen their language programmes over time.
As Angela Signorastri, Director of Accreditation at Eaquals, explains:
“One of the defining strengths of Eaquals accreditation is that it is never a simple tick-box exercise. Our inspections are collaborative and developmental. Institutions receive detailed feedback and work with inspectors to identify strengths as well as opportunities for growth, making accreditation part of an ongoing process of improvement.”
Supporting a Growing Global Network
The introduction of the K-12 accreditation also reflects the evolving composition of the Eaquals community.
Currently, schools working in the primary and secondary sector represent around six percent of Eaquals accredited institutions. However, interest in this area continues to grow.
Today, the Eaquals network spans more than 30 countries. It brings together language schools, universities, online providers and schools that share a commitment to high-quality language education.
By introducing a framework tailored to the K-12 environment, Eaquals continues to support institutions across the sector. At the same time, it strengthens quality standards in language education worldwide.
