What does sustainability actually mean in education?

For the English Preparatory School at Arkın University of Creative Arts and Design (ARUCAD), it means looking beyond environmental issues and considering the wider conditions that help education thrive.

With support from the Eaquals Member Event Fund 2026, ARUCAD organised Innovating Education Through Sustainability on 26 June 2026. The international conference brought together around 100 educators, academics, researchers, school leaders and language education professionals from Northern Cyprus and Türkiye, both in person and online.

The event explored how innovative, inclusive and learner-centred practices can support meaningful and lasting improvement.

Looking at sustainability from different angles

The programme considered sustainability through several aspects of education, including teacher and learner well-being, leadership, educational quality, cultural inclusion, digital innovation and lifelong learning.

Sinem Atamsoy Koşar opened the main presentations with a keynote on well-being, leadership and quality in learning. She highlighted the relationship between psychologically safe learning environments, teacher well-being and students’ learning experiences.

Zeynep Oğul Akın then explored culturally responsive teaching, growth mindset, diversity and inclusion in global English-language classrooms.

In an online session, Dawn Dickens looked at how sustainability can support innovation in teaching and learning, while helping learners develop critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and responsible leadership.

From ideas to classroom practice

The conference also gave participants the chance to explore practical areas of their work.

Parallel sessions covered sustainability-focused curriculum development, digital teaching, vocational education, teacher well-being, learner autonomy, inclusive materials design and the responsible use of AI in academic writing.

This practical focus gave participants ideas they could consider and adapt within their own educational contexts.

For ARUCAD staff and other attendees, one of the key outcomes was a broader understanding of sustainability as part of educational quality—not simply as an environmental issue.

Participants also explored ways to bring sustainability into curriculum design, teaching, assessment, digital learning and institutional practice.

Making connections that continue beyond the event

The conference also created space for educators from Northern Cyprus and Türkiye to exchange experiences and discuss their approaches to education.

These conversations provided a foundation for further collaboration and gave participants the opportunity to look at familiar challenges from different perspectives.
