North Cyprus ELT Community Launches at A-Z Conference

From Dialogue to Development: Highlights from the 2nd National A-Z ELT Conference

Supported by the Eaquals Member Event Fund, the 2nd National A-Z ELT Conference took place on 3 May 2025 at Bahçeşehir Cyprus University, bringing together educators, researchers, and practitioners from across Northern Cyprus and Turkiye. This year’s theme, “ELT in Dialogue: Building Connections, Sharing Stories,” served as both inspiration and call to action.

The day opened with speeches by leading figures from the host university, including Prof. Dr. Emrah Erkurt, Asst. Prof. Dr. Aman Rassouli, and Senior Instructor Eda Aşilmaz, each emphasising the importance of reflective practice, community, and sustainability in English language education.

A Lively Exchange of Ideas

The event featured an engaging mix of plenaries, academic talks, and interactive workshops. Topics ranged from AI integration in classrooms and formative assessment strategies to NeuroELT and digital speaking assessments. Plenary speaker Sinem Atamsoy Koşar set the tone with a session titled “The Heart of Change: The Human Touch in Teaching and Leading.” Further insights came from Eda Aşilmaz, discussing organizational success in educational settings, and Duygu Özler, who explored teacher well-being and long-term career sustainability.

Sessions were hands-on and practical, offering tools that educators could apply immediately. Workshops on exam development, psychological safety, and brain-based learning drew particularly strong engagement.

Founding the North Cyprus ELT Community

With participation from 16 universities and 4 colleges, the conference fostered a collaborative environment that set the stage for future partnerships. One of the key highlights of the event, was the formal launch of the North Cyprus ELT Community, a collective initiative by directors of English Preparatory Schools. This milestone represents a commitment to ongoing cooperation, shared resources, and continued professional growth.
