MoU Highlights Sustainable Language Education
Eaquals Signs MoU with Cambridge English on Sustainable Language Education
Eaquals has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cambridge English, reaffirming a shared interest in placing sustainability within the wider context of quality language education. The agreement was signed in Cambridge by Dr Lou McLaughlin, Executive Director at Eaquals, and Francesca Woodward, Managing Director for English at Cambridge University Press & Assessment.
As part of the MoU, both organisations recognise the growing importance of equipping learners with the skills and awareness needed to engage with environmental, social, and economic issues. Cambridge’s Sustainability Framework for ELT, informed by extensive research, outlines key competencies that can be developed through language learning. It offers practical guidance on how themes connected to sustainability can be addressed meaningfully in the classroom, helping learners discuss real-world topics while building their linguistic abilities.
Francesca Woodward emphasised the significance of preparing learners for a changing world, noting:
“It’s essential that future generations are equipped with the skills, knowledge and attitudes they need to make a positive difference in the world. We know that education is a powerful tool for building a sustainable future and at Cambridge, we’re committed to supporting teachers in our sector by giving them the practical skills and knowledge they need to deliver education for sustainability. Our Sustainability Framework for ELT is a fantastic vehicle for this, and we’re excited to work with Eaquals to ensure even more people can benefit from the framework and make a positive impact on the world through education.”
Reflecting on the signing, Dr Lou McLaughlin highlighted how sustainability connects naturally with Eaquals’ longstanding mission:
“At Eaquals, our mission has always been to promote excellence and innovation in language education, and embracing sustainability is a natural extension of that mission. Language learning connects people, cultures, and ideas, and through this collaboration with our Associate Member, Cambridge English, we can help teachers equip their learners to become active, responsible global citizens. Together, we can ensure that language education not only broadens understanding but also develops the competencies needed to build a more sustainable future and a compassionate world.”
The MoU reinforces the importance both organisations place on supporting educators who wish to explore sustainability within language teaching. By drawing on structured, research-based insights such as those outlined in the Sustainability Framework for ELT teachers are better equipped to create learning experiences that connect language use with the broader world learners live in.
