How Language Learning Supports Personality Development
More Than Words: Can Language Learning Shape Who We Become?
When we think about learning a language, our minds often jump to vocabulary, grammar and communication skills.
But what if language learning also helps us become more confident, more creative and more open to the world around us?
This question shaped the OPTIMA Annual International Conference in Sofia, Bulgaria. The conference explored the theme “Language Education and Accelerated Personality Development.” Thanks to support from the Eaquals Member Event Fund, organisers invited educators to look beyond language proficiency and consider the wider impact language learning can have on learners’ lives.
Why Personal Development Matters in Language Education
Learning a language is about much more than mastering words and structures. It encourages learners to express themselves, understand different perspectives and engage with new cultures.
As a result, language classrooms can help learners build confidence, encourage curiosity and develop critical thinking alongside communication skills.
The conference explored this idea from many different angles. Rather than focusing on a single teaching method, speakers shared practical approaches that help learners build both language skills and personal confidence.
Topics included learner-centred assessment, multilingual classrooms, creativity, music and rhythm in learning, critical thinking, materials development and teacher education. Each session explored a different topic. Together, they reinforced one clear idea: language education supports learners as people, not only as language users.
Bringing Ideas into the Classroom
OPTIMA, an Eaquals Associate Member, organised the conference in partnership with the Department of Foreign Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics at the Technical University of Sofia. Together, they welcomed educators from four continents who share a commitment to quality language education.
The event also marked the centenary of Prof. Dr. Georgi Lozanov, founder of Suggestopedia, whose work continues to influence language teaching by recognising the importance of emotions, motivation and positive learning environments.
Throughout the conference, participants exchanged practical ideas and explored how they could apply them in their own teaching contexts. Participants discussed learner-centred lessons, supportive classroom environments and practical teaching strategies. They also explored approaches that can make a lasting difference long after the conference ends.
A Shared Commitment to Quality
Quality was another thread running throughout the event.
In his plenary session, Thom Kiddle, Chair of Eaquals, explored the idea of Humanising Quality Assurance in Language Education: The Eaquals Ethos. His presentation highlighted that quality assurance is most meaningful when it is built on trust, collaboration and a shared commitment to continuous improvement.
The conference reflected these principles throughout. Educators shared experiences openly, challenged ideas respectfully and explored how quality teaching continues to evolve to meet learners’ changing needs.
Supporting Events That Create Lasting Impact
The Eaquals Member Event Fund supported the conference and helped make the event possible. The fund enables members to organise professional events that encourage learning and the exchange of ideas across the international language education community.
Conferences create valuable opportunities to meet colleagues and hear new perspectives. However, their greatest value often comes afterwards.
Participants will now take those ideas back to their classrooms, teacher training programmes and educational organisations around the world. As a result, learners will benefit from fresh ideas, international perspectives and teachers who continue to improve their practice.
That may be the conference’s most lasting message: when teachers continue learning, learners benefit every day.
